Across from this beach park, on the mauka (mountain) side of the road is Maniniholo dry cave. According to legend the cave was named after the area’s head fisherman of the Menehune, mythological little people or dwarfs of the Hawaiian Islands. The cave is large enough to stand in, but the further you venture in, the lower the ceiling becomes.
Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, is a great place to snorkel and dive. Teeming with marine life, the beach acquired its nickname due to the network of coral formations and arches provided by the reefs. The north shore road ends at Ke’e Beach. This reef-protected beach, perfect for swimming or snorkeling, marks the beginning of the Na Pali Coast and the site of the Kalalau trailhead.
The Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile (18 km) footpath that serves as the only land access into Na Pali State Park. The first section of the trail is a 2-mile (3.2 km) trek that brings you to Hanakapiai stream and beach. After a vigorous hike a dip in the waters of Hanakapiai may seem inviting, but strong rip currents and hazardous ocean conditions make this area extremely dangerous; so, people are advised not to swim at this beach. Also, appropriate footwear, drinking water, and bug spray are essential for enjoying this journey.
Limahuli Gardens offers visitors at our Haena vacation rentals an opportunity to view a wide variety of native plants and birds within a tropical rainforest landscape. Stroll the terraced garden and learn about Hawaiian culture and history. An added bonus are the breathtaking vantage points of the valley, mountains, and Pacific Ocean.
If the formal uniform of your true getaway is swimwear and slippahs, and your daily activities include swimming, snorkeling, or a whole lot of nothing, then experience the serenity of the place “at the end of the road” - Haena.
